Big Sky Lodges is based on our 17 acre family croft on the edge of the beautiful Black Isle. The croft has been in our family for nearly 30 years when Angus and Chrissie bought it as a place to escape town life and try their hand at crofting. Over the years they’ve run a fresh herb business, grazed the land with cows, sheep and horses and at one point had over 500 free range chickens! In 2001 they decided to build their first beautiful Scandinavian self-catering holiday lodge which they imported from Lapland. Angus painstakingly built it himself with a bit of help from a few mates and children Ailsa and Dan. Red Kite lodge turned out to be such a success with Highland visitors that they build five more lodges and Big Sky was born. A place for families and couples to switch off from the busy lives, get together to celebrate, take a deep breath of Highland air and explore the natural beauties that Scotland has to offer.
a secret getaway
In 2010 Angus and Chrissie retired from Big Sky to do some exploring of their own and the running of Big Sky was handed down to their daughter Ailsa, who now lives on the croft with her husband Jonny and daughters Rosie and Caitlin. To begin with, they lived on the croft in a vintage caravan, gradually refurbishing it into a lovely tiny home for two. Once Rosie came along it became apparent that it was a little too tiny as a base for a business and a baby. They built their very own Finnish lodge, Big Sky HQ, as the perfect base to manage the business and grow a family of their own. The caravan became the Hideaway, a colourful getaway, hidden among the Rowan trees, loved by guests and friends alike.
For the family and for the guests who return to Big Sky again and again, it’s a special place to get away from the world, slow down and spend time beside a crackling fire savouring a local dram, make friends with our famous Highland coos, or wrap up warm for a crisp winter’s walk in the woods or an evening stargazing from the deck.
Big Sky is a secret getaway for those who love the countryside and the outdoors, there’s hillwalking, climbing, fishing and exploring a plenty but at the end of the day you can relax in all the comfort of modern Scottish design.
