The Scottish Highlands stretch from the Cairngorms National Park and Speyside in the south, to the sandy shores of the Moray Firth in the East; north to the Pentland Firth, the strait separating the mainland from Orkney, to the dramatic and rugged west coast where the mountains steeply rise up from the many sea lochs. The north coast stretches from Cape Wrath in the west to John o’ Groats and Duncansbay Head in the east. On the west coast, admire the magnificent gardens at Poolewe, and the fishing towns of Lochinver, Ullapool, Mallaig and Gairloch. Wander around Castle Urquhart and look for the Loch Ness Monster – you might even see it. Drive down the length of the Caledonian Canal, which runs across the country from east to west. This is one of the true remaining wildernesses in Europe with its majestic scenery and wildlife. The area includes the highest mountains, Ben Nevis and Ben MacDui, the largest and deepest lochs in Britain, Loch Ness and Loch Morar with their own monsters and the most glorious glens like Glen Affric, where the ancient Caledonian pine forest dominates the hillsides; with eagles and red deer commonplace.
